A Veterans Safeway to Work Program (VSWP) Update from Kenneth R.

Posted on Updated on

Our Veterans Safeway to Work Program (VSWP) made possible by the Safeway Foundation and Vons Foundation and offered by San Joaquin Valley Veterans  (SJVV), a project of WestCare California, provides vocational assistance to Veterans in need of supplies or training for their desired profession. We’d like to share a letter written by a Veteran that we serve to our wonderful staff that helped him find his upcoming job with the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital!

“Greetings brother Combs,

I just wanted to inform you that as of September 3, 2017, I will be working at the VA Hospital full-time. I was offered a position in the laundry room once I completed the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program with the VA. I want to thank Denis and you for all of the time and hard work that you both invested in me. You both gave me opportunities when nobody else did. You looked beyond my legal issues and saw me for the man that I am. I am thankful to have you guys in my life; you are blessings to me. I will always keep in contact with you both just to let you know how I am doing. You both kept me motivated and my head looking to the sky.

If it was not for Denis telling me how the Veterans Safeway to Work Program (VSWP) could assist me, I would probably still be unemployed. Denis has a lot of knowledge that can benefit Veterans. I am also thankful that he told me about the CWT program and was an advocate for me getting into that program. VSWP allowed me to purchase the necessary items that I needed for work and got me to my first paycheck by purchasing me a full tank of gas.

If you can pass this message along to the individuals who provided the funding from Safeway: You do not know how blessed I am to have you help the unemployed Veterans that live in the Fresno/Madera area. I know I am not the only one you did this for, but I truly want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You gave me life again. You confirmed to me that everything is going to be alright because there are people that truly care about Veterans.”

A Veterans Safeway to Work Program (VSWP) Update from James S.

Posted on Updated on

STUBBLEFIELD3Our Veterans Safeway to Work Program (VSWP) made possible by the Safeway Foundation and Vons Foundation and offered at our Veterans Plaza transitional living facility for male Veterans provides vocational assistance to Veterans living on-site. It is our absolute pleasure to share an update from James, one of our Veterans that VSWP has helped!

“I just wanted to let you know that I am very happy with my employment here at Ecodynamics Inc as a full-time Pump Service Technician in Monte Vista, Colorado. I am having so much fun doing what I love to do. The clothes and shoes that the VSWP program purchased for me from Walmart are coming in handy. If it was not for the program, I would not be warm and most likely, I would have been ready to come back to California again. The program assisted me in filling out my job application and building my resume, which I am very thankful for. Without the program, I would still be living at the Veterans Plaza looking for a job. I am making $26 per hour, which is a lot, especially for a guy that was living off about $400 in benefits each month. All of my tools were shipped out here safely. I really would like to thank the VSWP and Veterans Plaza Case Managers for working with me and encouraging me to get back to work. Please continue to set the tone, you are doing a great job!”

Peace,

James S.

“Hello,

My name is Larry W. and I just wanted to let you know that since I completed the United Trucking School, I obtained a job through Bhandal Bros. Trucking, Inc. I drive the 11 Western State Region. If it was not for the Veterans Safeway to Work Program, I do not know where I would be at this point in my life! Before I left the Veteran’s Plaza, my case managers, Denis Brewer and Curtis Combs, assisted me with mock interviewing skills, took me to get my first haircut in over 20 years and made sure that I was groomed well for my interview.

It really feels good to have people like Denis and Curtis on my team. They were good to me at my stay at the Veteran’s Plaza and motivated me to get into my career. During my first run in my diesel, I drove to Arizona and then off to New Mexico. I was able to get an apartment and I am financially stable again. I am at a point in my life where I am happy again. I will be keeping in contact and sending more pictures. My goal in life is to own my own diesel and work for myself. Thanks to the Veteran’s Safeway to Work Program and my case managers at Veteran’s Plaza, my dream of trucking has become a reality!  Now back to trucking, I go…next stop: Portland.” – Larry W.
